Reddit Self-Promotion Rules: What Is Actually Allowed?

Reddit does not provide a current, universal percentage that makes self-promotion acceptable. Its spam policy sets a sitewide baseline, and each subreddit can add stricter rules for posts, comments, and links.

The short answer

There is no sitewide “safe percentage”

The familiar 10% idea comes from an old Reddit self-promotion wiki. Reddit now labels that page as no longer updated. Treat it as historical context, not permission. Your decision depends on current platform policy, the community’s rules, relevance, repetition, disclosure, and moderator judgment.

Three layers to check before publishing

LayerScopeWhat it means
Current Reddit policyApplies sitewideRepeated or unsolicited mass engagement, repetitive posting, unsolicited messages, and tools that facilitate spam are policy concerns.
Community rulesApplies within a subredditA community may limit links, product mentions, promotional posts, comments, or require a recurring promotion thread.
Historical 10% guidanceOld reference onlyThe old self-promotion wiki described 10% as a general rule of thumb, but Reddit marks that page as no longer updated.

Is the Reddit 10% rule still official?

No current Reddit policy gives a universal 10% or 9:1 allowance. The old wiki did describe 10% as a “general rule of thumb,” but the page itself says it is no longer updated and points readers to current Help Center guidance. Staying under a ratio does not override spam policy or a subreddit’s rules.

Self-promotion and spam are related, not identical

A product mention can be relevant and transparent, but it can still be disallowed by a community. Spam concerns often arise from the pattern: repeated or unsolicited mass engagement, repetitive posts, off-topic link drops, unsolicited messages, or tools that facilitate spam. Conversely, “I did not include a link” does not make a repeated pitch community-appropriate.

Moderators can remove content or ban an account from their community. That is different from a platform-level action by Reddit administrators.

How common situations should be evaluated

SituationLower-risk next step
One relevant answer mentions your product transparentlyCheck whether comments and product mentions are allowed. Answer the question first and omit the mention if it adds nothing.
The same comment is pasted into many threadsDo not publish repeated campaign copy. Repetition and mass engagement can create a sitewide spam concern even when each thread looks related.
You want to submit your own articleCheck link, self-promotion, flair, and designated-thread rules. Ask moderators through ModMail when the written rules are unclear.
A subreddit has a weekly promotion threadFollow that thread’s format and limits. A designated thread is context, not a blanket exception to Reddit’s spam policy.
You want to DM many people who mentioned a problemDo not send unsolicited messages at scale. A community rule cannot turn mass unsolicited messaging into permission.

A pre-publication checklist

  • Read the current subreddit rules, pinned posts, and any promotion-thread instructions.
  • Read the full thread and confirm that your answer addresses the question in front of you.
  • Check whether the contribution is allowed as a post, comment, link, or message—not just whether the subreddit is broadly relevant.
  • Disclose your relationship to the product plainly when it matters to the answer.
  • Remove the product name and link as a test. If the answer is no longer useful, improve the answer before considering a mention.
  • Keep the final interpretation and publishing decision with a human who has reviewed the context.

Illustrative examples

Lower-risk, but still check

A founder answers a direct question with specific experience, says they built the product, and follows a community rule that permits relevant recommendations. The answer remains useful even if the reader does not act on the mention.

Practical note: Still check the current rules; no example is a universal permission.

Ambiguous: clarify first

A founder wants to post a case study containing a link in a community that allows some promotion but does not explain personal articles.

Practical note: Review similar accepted posts or ask the moderators before publishing.

Clearly high-risk

A campaign pastes the same product pitch into many threads or sends unsolicited DMs to people who mentioned a problem.

Practical note: Do not publish the repeated or mass outreach.

Where IntentLoom fits—and where it does not

IntentLoom can help you find product-, problem-, competitor-, and recommendation-related conversations, prioritize them for review, inspect context, and prepare editable drafts. You still need to read the thread, check current community rules, and decide whether to publish.

IntentLoom does not determine whether a subreddit permits a specific post or comment, replace checking current rules, or guarantee that content or an account will avoid moderation.

Reddit self-promotion FAQ

Does Reddit allow self-promotion?

There is no single permission for all of Reddit. Reddit’s current spam policy applies sitewide, while each subreddit can set stricter rules for posts, comments, and links. Check the community rules and make a useful, relevant contribution before mentioning your product.

Is Reddit's 10% self-promotion rule still current?

The 10% guideline comes from an old Reddit self-promotion wiki that Reddit marks as no longer updated. Treat it as historical context, not a current sitewide allowance or safe harbor. A ratio cannot override the current spam policy or a subreddit’s rules.

Can a subreddit ban self-promotion completely?

Yes. A subreddit can create and enforce its own participation rules, including rules that disallow self-promotion or restrict it to a recurring thread. Moderators can remove content or ban an account from their community.

Can I mention my own product in a Reddit comment?

It depends on the current community rules and the context. Read the full thread, answer the question first, disclose your relationship, and leave the mention out if it is not necessary. A transparent mention is not automatically permitted just because it is in a comment.

Is posting without a link still self-promotion?

Yes. Self-promotion is not limited to URLs. A brand name, product description, repeated recommendation, or invitation to contact you can still be promotional, so the same relevance, repetition, disclosure, and community-rule checks apply.

Does disclosing that I am the founder make a product mention acceptable?

Disclosure makes the relationship clear, but it does not create permission. The contribution still needs to fit the community, follow its rules, and avoid repetitive or unsolicited engagement.
