How to enable Markdown mode on Reddit
Reddit's desktop website supports Markdown, but its rich text editor is the default unless you change your preferences. Switch to Markdown before pasting your draft so symbols such as **bold** are interpreted as formatting rather than pasted as literal text.
Switch a comment or text post to Markdown on www.reddit.com
- Open the comment box or text-post editor on Reddit. In the comment composer shown below, click the Aa button beneath the input to reveal the formatting toolbar. If the toolbar is already visible, skip this step.
- Click Switch to Markdown at the top right of the editor. Some post composers label this option Markdown Editor; the placement can vary between Reddit layouts.
- Use Copy Markdown in this tool, then paste into Reddit's Markdown input. Review the formatting on Reddit before submitting your post or comment.
Make Markdown your default Reddit editor
On desktop, open your avatar menu, choose Settings, then Preferences. Under Experience, turn on Default to markdown editor. You can go directly to Reddit's Preferences settings while signed in. If an already-open composer still shows the rich text toolbar, switch that composer manually before pasting.
This is a desktop-web preference. It does not restore a Markdown editor in Reddit's mobile apps.
On old.reddit.com, Markdown is already the input format
The classic old Reddit text-post and comment boxes accept Markdown directly. Paste your source into the text box; there is no rich text mode to switch out of. For code blocks that also work on old Reddit, indent each line with four spaces instead of using triple-backtick fences.
Using the Reddit app? Reddit is moving its iOS and Android composers to rich text, where pasted Markdown does not automatically convert. Use Reddit in a desktop browser for this workflow, or apply formatting with the app's own controls. See Reddit's editor help and Markdown formatting guide.

The preview approximates the supported syntax — styling can differ on Reddit. Old-site differences such as fenced code blocks, backslash line breaks, and parenthesis-style numbered lists are summarized in the cheat sheet and the FAQ below.

Copy the exact source
Copy Markdown copies your complete raw draft, preserving trailing spaces, blank lines, and indentation. The character count includes the Markdown syntax itself and is not a Reddit posting limit.

What is this Reddit Markdown editor?

Is my draft uploaded to a server?
No. The Reddit Markdown editor and preview run in your browser. Your draft is saved locally in this browser, never uploaded to our servers or shared by the editor. The page still loads ordinary site assets like any other page.
Is the preview exactly what Reddit will show?
No. The preview approximates Reddit’s documented Markdown subset; it is not an exact copy of any Reddit client. Styling, spacing, and unsupported constructs can render differently on reddit.com, old Reddit, or the mobile apps, so review your post after pasting.
How do I paste my draft into Reddit?
On desktop web, open the post or comment editor and switch it to Markdown Mode before pasting; Markdown editing is available on reddit.com and old.reddit.com. Copy Markdown preserves your exact source — including trailing spaces and blank lines — so paste it unchanged.
Why do fenced code blocks and backslash line breaks behave differently on old Reddit?
Those work on the current reddit.com parser but not on old Reddit. Old Reddit does not support fenced code blocks (indent code by four spaces instead) and needs two trailing spaces for a line break instead of a backslash at the end of a line. The cheat sheet notes these differences; you decide whether old-site compatibility matters for where you post.
Does Markdown work in the Reddit mobile apps?
Not as a Markdown editor. Reddit is transitioning its mobile apps to a rich text composer, and standard Markdown syntax no longer automatically converts there, while Markdown editing remains available on desktop web. If you compose here for mobile, apply the formatting with the app’s rich text controls instead of relying on pasted Markdown.
Is my draft saved if I leave or reload?
Yes. Your Reddit Markdown draft is automatically saved in this browser and restored when you return to this page, even after reloading or closing the tab. Use Clear to delete the saved draft and start again. Drafts do not sync across browsers or devices. Browser storage must be available; clearing site data or ending a private browsing session can remove the saved draft.
What does the character count measure?
The number of Unicode code points in your raw Markdown source, including the Markdown syntax itself — asterisks, backticks, pipes, and all. Reddit’s posting limits vary by account, community, and client and are not published here, so the count does not certify whether Reddit will accept your post.
